SA scoops gold at the Chelsea Flower Show
The Kirstenbosch-South Africa exhibit scooped a gold medal at the renowned Chelsea Flower Show in London. David Davidson and Raymond Hudson, the innovative design team, made sure SA collected their 30th medal in the exhibition. “With this exhibit we took the climate change theme from 2008 further by showing how vital biodiversity is for our survival,” said Davidson. “The 2009 exhibit shows some of what makes South Africa the third most biologically diverse country in the world.”

New crime unit to replace Scorpions
Anwar Dramat, deputy provincial commissioner of police in the Western Cape, will head the new unit that is set up to replace the Scorpions – promising to “work for all South Africans to help rid country of fraud, corruption and organised crime.” Working within crime intelligence and dealing with serious crimes within the SAPS command structures since 1995, Dramat said he remains deeply humble. “My life has been characterised by my desire to ensure that our country is as peaceful as possible.”

Zuma tells his new cabinet to watch their behaviour
The new Cabinet had its first meeting on Wednesday, and a stern Zuma told his ministers and deputies to mind their conduct – urging them to be ethical, responsible and work hard to benefit their office. Zuma also warned them to be careful about what they say in public, as everything they say will represent the government’s views. Let’s hope they listen to our new Zulu President – who has already made key changes since his inauguration two weeks ago.

Vida e Caffé to open in London
Great news for South Africans in London: from March next year you can pop in to Vida e Caffé and have a cup of coffee that will remind you of home. Opening its first store on Regent’s Street, Vida is the third South African franchise to open in the UK – following Nando’s and Wimpy. Shaun Bond, one of the five operator shareholders, says he eventually intends to open a second London store as well. Vida currently has 38 stores throughout South Africa and is known for its vibrant “Afro-Portuguese” service and quality coffee.
