Peter De Villiers: Good For The Team?
My answer to that question, would be, yes!
But before I get into that, let me first start off by saying, well done to the Bokke, they scored their first back-to-back Test win in South Africa, over the All Blacks since 1976.
It truly was a memorable game, what with, Morné Steyn scoring all of South Africa’s 31 points! The most points scored by an individual against the all Blacks. It beat Andrew Mehrtens’s 10-year-old record of 29 points against Australia for the highest tally in a Tri-Nations Test. In referring to Morné’s excellent performance, a fellow team member, Beast Mtawarira said “When you work so hard up front, and get the rewards in the form of penalties, it galvanises the big boys because they know they know their efforts are paying off.” Morné proved to his critics this weekend, that he’s not just a player who has a exceptional kicking ability, but a player with exceptional ability full stop.
31 – 19 win has put the bokke in good overall standings in the Tri Nations Series. A third win this Saturday in Newslands, will bring them, that one step closer to the trophy and overall victory for the 3rd time in Tri Nations History.
Now back to the matter at hand. Is Peter De Villiers good for the bokke? I truly believe that the team dynamics are perfect, Peter De Villiers – although has had some negative press in the past- is ideal for the team, I think he has limited involvement in the game strategy, which allows the important decisions to be made by the captain, John Smit and assistant coaches. In other words, the players are left to do what they do best, play rugby and play it well and Peter, as the team ‘figurehead’ is left to deal with the politics. I say keep it like that, separate the sport, from the ‘games’ played by the so called rugby experts, and so far, if my interpretations are correct, it’s working!
Mmmmmmmmm. Great game! I am still not convinced when it comes to Peter De Villiers though, he’s a bit of a chop. But as you say, he has limited involvement in the game strategy – which is definitely a good thing
Yes, I think he’s a chop too, but a chop that doesn’t meddle in the affairs of the captain, he loves the spot-light and the media and while everyone is distracted by the ‘Delicious’ comments that he’s making, the boys can get on with it.
