Happy new year and all that jazz!!!

I think I’ve eaten enough fruit cake and roast chicken to last an eternity! It just tastes sooooo good every single time….I wish my taste buds would just hurry up and get bored of it already, really! Alas, the love handles are a-growing.

Tom’s love handles are growing too, and they’re so cute! No sign of him getting bored of his milk either..

The Sanders wish everyone an adventurous New Year in Africa!

Tiny Hungry toe’s favourite outfit

Tom has a favourite outfit. You can see his smile is bigger when he’s wearing it. My heart melts everytime he smiles his gorgeous toothless smile.

And you thought Superjerm could just ride bikes! mmpff!

Would you ever have thought that a man who throws himself over a waterfall in a little plastic kayak…..

….would also sit with a HB and sketch his wife’s former preggy belly? SERI-USSS?? Would you ever have thought?

Because I would never EVER have thought that HB pencils and Riot kayaks mix well together.

He never ceases to amaze me..

And girls – doesn’t this kinda make your heart melt…just a fraction? Just a eeensy bity bit? But it doesn’t end at the sketch. Nope. He’s doing an oil painting!!!!!! Yes I also thought to myself how 16th century is this?

I’ll let you see the masterpiece when he is done but here’s the inside scoop…it’s looking good.

Tom takes injections like a man! Kinda.

We had to take our little munchkin for a second round of immunisations today. Both Jem and I were nervous for the little guy but he didn’t think too much of it…

The drops were a piece of cake! Pffff!

And so were the injections….

NOT!!!!

But he got over it quite quickly…

Tomtom’s second wedding.

Little Tomtom, age 7 weeks and 5 days, attended his second wedding yesterday. He found it much like the first one.

He livened up a bit when the party started.

To Jason and Jenna, we wish you all the best throughout your married life.

The venue was amazing. Even though it was raining, the Nomadik Tent was cosy and intimate.

Once again Tom made me proud. He was so well behaved, he slept through the marriage ceremony, had a quick feed at the reception dinner table, stared wide eyed at all the sparkling lights in the tent for a while and then dosed off again whilst listening to the gentle jazz tunes.

Tom, you’re welcome to come out with us anytime my boy.

A Tribute to a True adventurer.

Welcome to the “new look” Phuthu blog!  Usually, I try to focus on happy things but sometimes I will write about things that aren’t so happy. Whatever comes into my mind actually…………

I have been thinking quite a bit this week about Hendri Coetzee, an expedition kayaker who was taken by the crocodile in the DRC on Tuesday. His body was never found, committed to the river for eternity. He was leading a group of American kayakers down a little-known stretch of white water in a wild country full of hazards at every turn ranging from bandits to corrupt officials to dangerous river creatures to  treacherous unknown rapids. The list doesn’t end here.

I had never met Hendri but I knew him well. He is me in my dreams,. He was a man who lived a life of adventure that I and many others only dream about. He had the courage to follow his insatiable pursuit of “the best day ever”. He was humble and brave and he was an incredible writer with a deep insight into life that few of us have. He shunned the accumulation of material possessions in favour of the intangible. The intangible and unexplainable feelings of experiencing and succeeding at such ambitious, dangerous and intimidating adventures.

The irony here is that although though he lived a life of great risk, no-one ever imagined he would die. He was supposed to be immortal, just like we are in our dreams.

Here is a touching tribute from Celliers Kruger, a friend and sponsor of Hendri’s.

RIP Hendri, I hope your new adventure never ends.
